Renal Calculi : Cure through Ayurveda.

In Ayurveda Renal Calculi is called as Ashmari. Ashm means 'Stone'. It is commonly called as Stone or Pathari . They are hard deposits of minerals and salts giving it shape of stone so called as Renal Stone.

Types Of Renal Calculi :

A) On the Basis of  Location.
B ) Chemical Composition.


A) Depending upon the Location: It is of five types--



     1. Nephrolithias
     2. Urolithiasis
     3. Ureterolithiasis
     4. Cystolithiasis
     5. Calyceal Calculi

B) Depending upon Chemical Composition :

  1. Calcium Stones
  2. Struvite Stones
  3. Uric Acid Stones
  4. Cystine Stones

Ayurvedic Perspective :

 Causes : Due to lifestyle disorders Vata gets aggravated obstructs the bladder and dries Pitta , Kapha and Shukra in the Urinary bladder this causes Calculus.

As per Ayurveda : Ashmari is of four types :
  1. Vatashamari
  2. Pitashamri
  3. Kaphashmari
  4. Shukrashmari

Warning Signs of Renal Calculus :

  1. Distention in bladder. 
  2. On and off pain in urethra and external genitals.
  3. Anorexia
  4.  Fever 
  5. Difficulty in passing urine 
  6. Odour of Urine - Smell of Goat's urine. 
These are the Early Signs which indicates that Stone formation has just started.
At this stage it can be easily managed by making some dietary modifications and changes in lifestyle.

Alarming Signs of Renal Calculus :

  1. Acute Pain in Umbilicus, Bladder, head of the bladder. Perineum.
  2. Obstruction in flow of urine
  3. Flow of urine is scattered and split due to obstruction caused by stone.
  4. Urine is not clear; sometimes it is blood stained.
  5. Frequent urge to pass urine.
  6. Pain and discomfort while performing physical exercises.

Management :

Prevention is the first step -

Kidney stones have the tendency of recurrence even after surgery. 
Recurrence rate in Males is 70 - 81 % and 47 - 60% in Females .

Do not hold natural urges of Urine, Stool and Semen  

Holding natural urge to urinate, toxins are retained in body . They precipitate and sediments. This leads to the formation of Renal calculus.

People who hold seminal discharge during sexual indulgence or in nocturnal emission. Than vitiated Vata dries 'Shukra' and forms Shukrashmari or Spermolith.

Prevent Constipation : 

Take natural laxative like Triphala, Isabgul, haritaki , luke warm milk to have regular bowel movements.

Avoid over consumption of Vitamin D and  Calcium supplements:

 Excess of calcium deposits and forms Calcium Oxalate stones.

Limit consumption of animal based protein ---

Food like eggs, fish, chicken, red meat as they contain high purine.

Avoid taking green leafy vegetables: 

They contain oxalates and with calcium forms calcium oxalates.
  •  Brinjal, arabi, kamal kakadi, cauliflower, tomato, peas.
  • Curd and Paneer should be avoided.
  • Avoid spicy and oily food.
  • Limit Tea and coffee.
  • Reduce salt intake.

Do's :

Intake of adequate amount of fluids :

 Lot of liquids should be consumed in form of luke warm water, coconut water, butter milk so that toxins may get easily flush out of kidneys.

Vegetables ---

 Kheera, Kakdi, Kaddu, Parwal, Sahijan, Petha, Coriander and Lemon should be consumed. 

Fruits ---

Pineapple, Amla, Papaya, Plum, Mango, Cantalopes are advisable.
Kulath is an important dal which should be used in various forms.
Yava ( Barley) is an important cereal.

Herbs :

 Punarnawa, Gokshura, Varuna, Pashanbheda, Shigru, Ela, Kushmand. They are diuretic in nature helps to flush out excess toxins .

Home Remedies :
1. Acute Pain : Apply luke warm Maha Narayan Oil in back and lower abdomen. 

Formulation:

Shwet Parpati, Yavkshar, Gokshuradi guggulu, Chandraprabha vati, Hazralyahood bhasm and many more helps to break the formed stone and diuretics flushes it out of kidney.

Decoctions :
Trinpanchmool kashayam, Br. Varunadi Kashayam
